This small boutique firm, which is driven by a value-oriented approach, was co-founded by Harry Hartford in June 2001. Hartford said that since performance at smaller boutique firms often is tied very closely to one or two people, every portfolio at Causeway is overseen by a group of portfolio managers to reduce risk. “If I got hit by the No. 46 bus, I don’t think the portfolios would suffer as a consequence." The firm remains solidly committed to uncovering value plays. “Value can arise for a variety of reasons, but ultimately it’s predicated on a belief that the market has mispriced the earnings capacity or the cash-generating capacity or the return that the business can generate on the capital at its disposal. Whatever the
reason, there are opportunities for us as value managers to exploit that mispricing.”
