Since it is perhaps best-known as a provider of retirement platforms for educators and the non-profit sector, there should be little surprise that in managing the mutual funds that made it the overall large-company Lipper winner, the emphasis at TIAA-CREF is on study and research. “Research provides the foundation for our investment approach,” said Lisa Black, senior managing
director and head of global public markets. On the equities side, “our principal investment approach is to try to drive excess returns using stock selection that is informed by a global research effort,” said Bill Riegel, a senior managing director and head of equity investments. While the equity team takes a bottom-up approach, it has developed another way to look at the world over the past three years.“Particularly given how correlated markets have been and how much in the thrall they have been to macro events, we’ve also tried to introduce a top-down point of view about when and how we need to take risk — or not — in the portfolio,” Riegel said.
