Mutual MassMutual Retirement Services does not take a do-it-yourself approach to its winning funds. “We are a manager of managers,” said Eric Wietsma, senior vice president of investment services for MassMutual’s Retirement Services Division. Wietsma said that while the target-date and target-risk portfolios use some MassMutual proprietary funds, the majority of assets are held in funds managed by unaffiliated investment firms. “One of the advantages of having a manager of managers approach is that we not only get the intellectual capacity of all these different firms in the way that they are managing money for us, but we are also able to tap into them to help form our view on asset allocation and whether there are ways to continually evolve the process.”
