Pity the poor bears. In a year when the Standard & Poor’s 500 is up 24.03%, going against the herd would have turned you into a bearskin rug. Shorting the blue-chip index would have put you into a very dark 19.04% cave, assuming you used the ProShares Short S&P 500 ETF (SH). Adding leverage or betting against a winning sector just made the bet less bearable.
