Kellie Mastersage 32
Investment advisor representative, Wealth Advisors of Iowa
Financial planning and financial literacy have been a big part of Kellie Masters’ life from the very beginning.
“I would come up with these elaborate budgets for the holidays,” she said of her childhood. “It was always a big interest of mine.”
Ms. Masters got into financial planning during the final semester of her undergraduate career at Iowa State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in finance. She later earned her master’s in family financial planning from her alma mater.
Ms. Masters initially joined her current firm, Wealth Advisors of Iowa, as a paraplanner, working with an established adviser. Over time, her role evolved, and now she acts as a liaison between the firm and the certified public accountants at McGowen Hurst Clark & Smith.
Among the things Ms. Masters finds most rewarding about her job is the fact that the firm supports her charitable efforts benefiting financial literacy.
For the last seven years, she’s been involved in Money Smart Week, a public awareness campaign that encourages individuals to gain better control over their personal finances. And for the second year in a row, Ms. Masters is serving as the Des Moines Area Coordinator for the project, leading more than 40 local professionals from the financial sector, government agencies and nonprofits.
She also this year organized the Iowa Bike Bash, a family-oriented bike ride, to coincide with the project, and got the word out to a whole new audience.
“We reached a new group of people to promote financial literacy, teach them about IRAs and retirement and how to choose an adviser,” she said.
