Emigrating from Poland to the United States when she was 19 and later studying economics in college are key experiences that inform Kasia Marczyk’s career as a financial adviser.
When Ms. Marczyk arrived in the U.S. from Poland, she planned to stay for a year. Ms. Marczyk lasted a lot longer. She wound up attending college in the northeast and graduated in 2005 before moving to Florida with her husband. She chose to make a go of it as an adviser when Ameriprise Financial Services Inc. hired her.
She left the big firm in 2009 and now has her own practice, Anchor Wealth Management Group, in West Palm Beach, Fla. She works with the local and state chapters of the Financial Planning Association. And it’s through the FPA that Ms. Marczyk focuses on emigres, education and diversity in the industry.
“Financial planning didn’t exist as a career in Poland when I lived there,” she said, adding that south Florida’s diverse population requires the help of planners who offer pro bono workshops through the FPA. “There are people coming here from Haiti and other countries, and they’re not used to saving in a 401(k) plan or even knowing what one is.”
She is on the FPA’s national diversity committee. “I am passionate about the FPA’s diversity initiative,” Ms. Marczyk said. “There are not a lot women in the business. Out of 50 advisers in my training class at Ameriprise, not even 10% were women. And the industry is still not promoted as female friendly.”
And her clients need plenty of instruction to reach their retirement goals. “I ask them, how real do you want to get about saving for retirement? You’re not doing this for me, I say. You are doing this for yourself.”
