William Bissett has found a comfortable spot where technology and financial planning meet in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Mr. Bissett is founder of Principled Heart, an online software solution to organize personal and financial information, particularly online information: Passwords for financial accounts, social media accounts, and other digital information that becomes incredibly important to your family and friends when you pass away.

Principled Heart is now on the back burner, in part because of the difficulty of attracting new customers. “I was running up the startup ramp, fell off of it, and was on my back staring at the sky,” he said. “As I was laying there, someone in the Charlotte angel investment community who is a mentor for local startups picked me up and showed me how to help other entrepreneurs through my own experiences.” He encouraged me to dust myself off and join others like me in Charlotte.

Now Mr. Bissett works as a mentor with Queen City Fintech, a 12-week incubator program for startups, as well as Queen City Forward, aimed at social entrepreneurs. (As you may have guessed, Charlotte is Queen City). “I’m trying to give back to the Charlotte startup community by better preparing future founders and investors,” Mr. Bissett said.

At the same time, he’s refocusing on financial planning. While too old for NexGen, he started the Charlotte chapter in 2014 and still advises them, Mr. Bissett said. And the part of financial planning he enjoys most is implementation. “I love co-creating a plan with the client and then developing strategies to defend their goals and strategically attack planning opportunities as they become available.”
