CEO, Pershing Advisor Solutions
Mark Tibergien, CEO of Pershing Advisor Solutions, has been a prominent thinker in business management and strategy formulation for 40 years. He is best known in the financial industry for introducing the concept of professional management to financial advising back in the 1980s.
In 1991, Mr. Tibergien conducted the first benchmarking study of financial planning practices. Several years later, he joined Moss Adams and built a consulting business to help advisory firms with strategy, structure, people, processes and transition of a business.
As his career evolved, he put a finer focus on the registered investment adviser segment, and now heads a firm that serves this market as a custodian.
“What has been interesting is that we know custody is commoditized, but when wrapped around business services it adds value,” he said.
Mr. Tibergien, 64, has traveled far from his rural roots. The son of a Belgian immigrant, he grew up in a small, economically depressed town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
His current “passion project” is giving back to his former public schools, sponsoring a high school class on personal economics and a summer program of financial education for fourth graders.
“Our long-range goals are to address people making bad decisions, the [industry] talent shortage and the reputation issues of the industry,” Mr. Tibergien said.
Reflecting on his upbringing, he said, “People are shaped by their experiences. I think I had an advantage by not having advantages growing up. It allows me to appreciate blessings such as career choices, the wealth you build and the ability to help others achieve.”
