Advisers, you're invited to take part in our 2018 Adviser Compensation, Profitability Survey

Blog-main

By Matt Sirinides

InvestmentNews Research invites all financial advisory firms to participate in its 2018 annual adviser benchmarking survey. We are making two important changes to this year's study that we hope will provide advisers and the industry with more valuable and comprehensive research benefits than ever before: 1. We have added elements of the compensation questionnaire to this year's benchmarking survey in order to produce a standalone update to our Adviser Compensation & Staffing Study in July. In this highly competitive market, we understand how important it is for firms to consistently evaluate compensation plans and staffing structure. Now firms won't have to wait until 2019 for fresh compensation data. 2. This year's InvestmentNews Financial Performance Study of Advisory Firms will be re-named The Study of Profitability & Pricing. We're making this update to reflect the true focus of the study: How advisories can... Read full post

How market moves affect advisers' bottom line

Stocky-Main

By Matt Sirinides

Over the long run, markets rise, and for that reason, advisory or wealth management fees based on a percentage of assets managed are a long-term win for passively growing advisory firm revenue. While quarterly billing dilutes the effects of market volatility, it will not protect a firm that collects the bulk of its revenue from asset-based fees from a bear market. Fortunately, many analysts are still predicting the S&P will land closer to 3,000 than not, but it's an interesting and worthwhile exercise to reflect on how this increasingly popular advisory firm business model is tied inextricably to the fortunes of the market.... Read full post

Misperceptions about the financial advice industry are stalling gender equality

Adviser-couple-women-iStock-Web

By AnnMarie Pino

Women remain underrepresented in the financial advice industry, progress toward gender equality is moving at a snail's pace and women in the industry still face substantial barriers to advancement. As a new report from InvestmentNews Research and State Street Global Advisors, "Women in advice: Inspiring the next generation of financial advisers," points out, firms can take steps to address these issues by transforming workplace culture, increasing flexibility, and creating a system that is transparent around compensation and promotions. However, addressing these management issues will do little good if younger generations are unaware of the industry or, for those who are, see it as unwelcoming. Male and female advisers alike believe that these are two of the largest barriers to achieving higher gender equality across the financial advisory industry. Overcoming a lack of awareness of what a career as a financial adviser entails, and... Read full post

How does your advisory firm stack up?

By IN Research and Ellie Zhu

With talent so hard to find and keep at advice firms, each practice should have a clear handle on how well it is – or isn't – compensating its brilliant workforce. The benchmarking data below show the greatest range of salaries occurs in what firms are paying their lead advisers, with the 3rd quartile of firms paying nearly twice that of the 1st quartile.Of course, salaries are only part of what firms pay to employees. Total income for advisers shows bonuses vary greatly between positions, roughly doubling as professionals climb each rung of the ladder of adviser roles. The analysis also shows exactly how top performers are pulling ahead of other firms, and the profitability measures and revenue per professional differences are huge. All figures are from the 2017 Adviser Compensation & Staffing Report, which captures full income statements, assets and client information, management and staffing strategies, and staff... Read full post

Advice industry in hiring mode

Hire-main

By Matt Sirinides

As the largest independent advisory firms continue expanding, something unexpected has happened along the way. The typical professional at one of these firms is no longer "independent" in the sense that he or she is an owner of the business. Instead, that individual is an employee of the firm. This trend first took hold emphatically in the 2015 InvestmentNews Adviser Compensation & Staffing Study, and it has only accelerated over the past year, according to the just-released 2017 edition of the study, sponsored by Pershing Advisor Solutions. It makes sense. The average firm has grown 11% annually over the last 12 years, tripling in size over that time. That growth is made possible by increasing head count and improving productivity, and this trend demonstrates that many firms in the industry have successfully developed and leveraged professional talent.... Read full post
