While there are many social media lists out there of people and businesses to follow on Twitter, InvestmentNews' own Power 20 "Power Tweeter" Michael Kitces, partner and director of research for Pinnacle Advisory Group and publisher of The Kitces Report and the blog Nerd's Eye View maintains a list of people financial advisers should follow on Twitter. Not surprisingly, @MichaelKitces himself is very active sharing ideas and content for financial planners on Twitter.

Check out the latest list below to see how some financial planners are building their own businesses around Twitter, and where to get interesting news and information for financial advisers via Twitter. And remember, one of the benefits of Twitter is just to listen - which can be done entirely free of compliance hassles - so it's easy to get started.

Investment Information

@AbnormalReturns - The Abnormal Returns blog is an incredible resource of economic, markets, and finance information for advisers, and the Twitter feed of its founder and editor Tadas Viskanta does not disappoint, either!

@ResearchPuzzler - Tom Brakke publishes the Research Puzzle blog, and is a consultant, writer, and investment consultant, who shares some fascinating insights on the latest investment research.

@FarnamStreet - Shane Parrish of the Farnam Street blog shares interesting wisdom and insights, particularly related to behavior change and behavioral finance.

Advanced Planning Ideas

@TheSlottReport - Read all the latest news and developments about IRAs from retirement guru Ed Slott!

@529Guru - Joe Hurley founded SavingForCollege.com and is the undisputed Guru of anything and everything on 529 plans (with a lot of other college savings wisdom, too!).

Adviser Research, News and Information

@ZywaveFP - Zywave Financial produces financial planning software, including NaviPlan, Profiles, and more; in their Twitter feed, though, they share a wide range of tips, news, and information for advisers.

@CM_eXchange - A relative newcomer, Content Marketing Exchange shares a steady stream of adviser news and information, and also some great tips and ideas for social media and content marketing strategies.

@Vanguard_FA - This Twitter feed for Vanguard Financial Advisor services shares a wealth of research about investing research, particularly related to ETFs and ETF strategies.

@BillWinterberg - Adviser tech guru Bill Winterberg of the FP Pad blog is a highly engaged Twitter user who shares his ongoing wisdom and insights about technology trends and developments for advisers.

@ddjanowski - Davis Janowski publishes InvestmentNews' own INTech blog, and shares a steady stream of the latest technical developments on software tools for advisers.

@140Ltd - Ron Rhoades is one of the leading afficionados of fiduciary and all its nuanced implications, and shares his wealth of information through his Twitter stream and also his Scholarly Financial Planner blog.

Financial Advisers Succeeding on Twitter

@BrittneyCastro - If you want to see building an advisory business on social media really looks like, search no further than Brittney Castro's Twitter feed and her business Financially Wise Women

@R_Alan_Moore - Another adviser having success building a business using blogging and social media, Alan Moore is the owner of Serenity Financial Consulting and shares content and also shows how he pushes the envelope on using the latest adviser technology tools.

@BehaviorGap - Carl Ricards is the Director of Investor Education at BAM Alliance, writes a column for the New York Times, published "The Behavior Gap: Simple Ways to Stop Doing Dumb Things With Money" and wields a mean Sharpie.

@MSCasady - For all those who say Twitter can't be done in a broker-dealer environment, Mark Casady is proving them all wrong; he's may not be an adviser, but as the Chairman and CEO of LPL Financial, he's active on Twitter, and shares genuinely useful and interesting articles on leadership and organizational management!

And of course, don't forget to follow me (@MichaelKitces) and @NewsFromIN for all the latest news and information for financial advisers!
