I had to laugh at the pious indignation expressed by several of your readers (Letters, Dec. 15) over the all too accurate Dow Jones Newswires depiction of grotesque nunaceousness.

Having suffered through grades 1-8 under the malignant glare of an assortment of leathery, psychotic misfits, I can attest to the mental cruelty and physical abuse that is lovingly administered by the “devoted” sisters. Their repressed, fiendish view of the world created such a wonderful atmosphere!

However, I cannot believe that my formative education was in any way a positive experience, excepting my uncanny ability to write while my hand is smacked repeatedly by a wooden ruler. My heathen colleagues, having escaped such pleasures, are professionally disadvantaged by their lack of this and other essential survival skills – e.g., expanded peripheral vision (to detect incoming attacks), good posture (for sitting perfectly still in a small wooden chair with eyes fixed ahead) and the ability to appear smaller than actual size (to avoid detection and interrogation).

Not that I am bitter or scarred for life. But sanctimonious puritans who can’t handle a little clever advertising humor really annoy the hell out of me. Let them seethe in the self-righteous comfort of their narrow-minded existence.

Numbers people stiff?

Relax, guys. No one is attacking your religion. And get a sense of humor. You are perpetuating the stereotype that all “numbers people” are old stiffs.

Let’s censor Catholics

After personally suffering firsthand in a parochial “pit of hell,” I commend you for running this ad. It has been known for a long time the abuse distributed by supposedly good brothers and sisters in the name of discipline. As far as parochial school abuse goes, I’ve seen too much, my mother and grandmother have seen too much.

I have found a great many in the Catholic church to be no
thing more than dogma lovers and authoritarians who love the fact they hold power positions and feel untouchable in the name of God. You want censorship? Censor them.

Hey, it’s Dow

Since when does a humorous ad, in good taste or not, merit canceling subscriptions and calling you bigots?

If you apologize for running an ad from one of the most prominent financial news services, you’re a bunch of cowards.
