Volunteer of the Year
Finalist: ANDY SETH
Andy Seth combines entrepreneurial zeal and deep-seated compassion.
A businessman since he was 13, Mr. Seth, founder of LotusGroup Advisors in Denver (primary custodian TD Ameritrade Institutional), applies his skills to his volunteer work with Minds Matter of Denver, an after-school program for high-potential high school students from low-income families.
“I was one of these students,” he said. “My striving parents were immigrants from India and I grew up in a motel in [Los Angeles]. I've lived that fear of not having money. Education was my way out.”
Minds Matter students work intensively for three years with mentors who guide them through rigorous course work, career-focused activities and the college admissions process.
The organization has a 100% success rate in getting students into college, often with substantial scholarship assistance.
Mr. Seth, 33, has had a strong effect on Minds Matter.
“Over the past three years, we've doubled the number of volunteers, the number of mentees and the number of donors. In five years, we'll double our number of students served — that's a promise,” he said.
“Most nonprofits are not run in an entrepreneurial way. You have to be very creative about how you inspire, lead and gain people's confidence.”
