Finalist: RANDY CARVER AND CARVER FINANCIAL SERVICES
The employees of Carver Financial Services Inc. (broker-dealer Raymond James Financial Services Inc.) in Mentor, Ohio, are fundraising and “food-raising” champs.
The team organizes and runs an annual golf outing that has netted about $70,000 over the past 14 years for the Rotary Club of Mentor’s bone marrow project. But that’s only half of what they raised — another $70,000 has gone to support other local and national charities.
Carver employees also have held food drives that have yielded more than 40,000 pounds of food for needy families over the past 20 years.
“We definitely believe in social capital,” said Randy Carver, the firm’s founder. “It’s also good business. We get a lot of good PR. The more philanthropic things we do, the more happens for the company,” he said.
The Carver team has a formidable source of inspiration in the boss. A survivor of both a plane crash, which crushed his voice box, and eight bouts of cancer, which he says resulted in the removal and rearrangement of a number of his body parts, he sets the bar for achievement against all odds.
He takes his trials in stride, joking to the interviewer that “there’s more of me in jars than [there is] talking to you.”
