Winning teams have a shared dream and get better every day, said Jim Craig, goalie of the 1980 U.S. Gold medal “Miracle on Ice” hockey team.
Mr. Craig, opening the Financial Planning Association Business and Education meeting in Boston on Saturday, said intense discomfort is the price tag for personal greatness.
He ought to know.
Mr. Craig, 58, helped his team pull off what’s considered one of the greatest sports upsets ever, beating the Soviet Union and then Finland to capture Olympic gold in Lake Placid, New York.
“You want to feel good about yourself?” Mr. Craig said. “Help define your client’s goals and make them come true.”
Advisers need to make sure that they have the technical abilities and knowledge to help clients achieve their dreams, which includes learning new things, Mr. Craig said.
Scott Rojas, a financial adviser with Eclectic Associates, said Mr. Craig’s speech was a reminder to advisers that “we have to be willing to take a chance and be willing to lose” sometimes when striving for success.
Mr. Craig’s advice to always be improving also resonated with Mr. Rojas.
“I interviewed and wasn’t hired, and then I went back seven years later, after having gotten my MBA, and they hired me,” he said.
