Michael Pellman Rowlandage 35
Senior VP, portfolio management director, financial adviser, The Vector Group at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management
Michael Pellman Rowland has been ensconced in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community for as long as he can recall, having grown up in Greenwich Village where his parents were one of only two straight couples in their building.
He has built on his strong kinship with the gay community to create a financial advice business focused on planning for couples without marriage equality. Though that landscape is changing, Mr. Rowland’s been a leader on LGBT issues internally at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management in New York — the only place he’s ever worked — for 13 years.
Three to four years ago Mr. Rowland added socially responsible investing to his list of specialties, helping investors put their money to work in support of their own beliefs.
He’s also championing SRI at the firm, recently becoming the only person from the wealth management division on the Environmental and Social Finance Steering Committee at Morgan Stanley.
While these two niche issues have helped him build a business managing more than $100 million in assets, for him, the focus is always on making sure his clients’ unique needs are met, and in many cases exceeded.
“I’m a strong listener, which allows me to empathize and understand my clients better than most,” Mr. Rowland said. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Mr. Rowland is a member of the Estate Planning Council of New York and a board member of Housing Works, a charity that targets homelessness and AIDS/HIV. He and his wife have two cats.
