From the time he was a teenager, Brandon Garrett knew he wanted to be a financial planner.
His father was a CPA and an adviser, so a career in the financial advice industry was always potentially in the cards. But one day when Mr. Garrett's father brought home a copy of a financial planning publication, the 15-year-old student was hooked.
"The magazine had an article about the financial planning program at Texas Tech," Mr. Garrett said, who eventually graduated from Texas Tech and is now a Texas Tech Personal Financial Planning Alumni Advisory Board member.
During his short time in the industry, his focus has changed, he said. He recently led an acquisition of an office in nearby Fort Worth, Texas. He has been a beta tester for LPL's robo-adviser platform, but still remains passionate about providing quality advice to as many clients as possible.
"In college, I was very focused on academics," he said. "I could have been a back-office guy. I was smart and had technical expertise. But I don't like spending time building financial plans. I like being in front of people."
