Brienne L. Dylewski's relationship with financial matters was established at a young age. Growing up in poverty, she recalls having her own budget at the age of 8 and moving out on her own at 17.
"The way I grew up really influenced my relationship with money," said Ms. Dylewski, who originally went to college to become an architect, but shifted her focus to financial planning.
At age 27, she became part owner of her firm, and at 33 she bought the rest of the business, which now has two employees and $225 million under management. She has participated in and developed financial literacy programs for non-profits, schools and free clinics for government employees.
Her next move, Ms. Dylewski said, is to bring on a couple more advisers as soon as she finds the right fit.
Serving an eclectic client base that ranges from people in their 20s to some nearing 100, she feels her personal experiences helps her push clients harder to be better savers and smarter investors.
"Some of my older clients are so thrifty and such good savers that I sometimes have a hard time convincing them to enjoy the fruits of their labors," Ms. Dylewski said. "But there are others that I worry about running out of money, because once you send them their last dollar you know they're going to be in horrendous shape."
