When Julia Wiss was forced to choose between management and being an adviser while working at Waddell & Reed, she chose the leadership track. “I was overseeing about 25 advisers, doing advice, development and recruiting as well as growing the branch,” Ms. Wiss said.
The exclusive move to leadership prepared her to form a Raymond James independent group called Lumen Wealth Group in 2017 with two colleagues, which provides her with a balanced lifestyle.
“Time with family is important,” she said. “It’s what motivates and drives me to be successful in business.”
As a founding partner of Lumen Wealth Group, Ms. Wiss resumed the dual role of adviser and leader, managing $100 million in assets with the team, but her upward trajectory started as an adviser at Independent Capital Management (ICM) when she was just 21 years old. There she began mentoring others.
Along her career path, she secured a Series 24 license and served as president of the Financial Planning Association Los Angeles chapter, where she initiated unique networking events for women advisers, such as group manicures.
“Fun activities allow you to know each other on a personal level,” she said. “Networking shouldn't be just happy hour."
She is currently chairwoman of the board for the chapter.
