Panel: The new metrics: Making sense of ESG ratings

Quality data about companies’ Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices is critical for effective investment analysis, but the lack of standardization and transparency in ESG reporting and scoring presents major challenges for investors. Third-party ESG data providers play an important role, but there are limitations in terms of differing methodologies which can lead to variance in scores. Our panel of leading ESG data providers will walk through the fundamentals of ESG ratings available to investors and help advisers understand its limitations as well as the challenges of using any single provider.

Panel: How to jumpstart your ESG communications strategy

As the demand for impact investment opportunities continues to grow, so does the increased responsibility on advisers to develop stronger investor education programs, increase transparency and adopt more precisely-defined metrics for measuring impact. ESG and impact investors, primarily motivated by moving the needle on specific environmental, social and governance issues, while also pursuing financial returns are increasingly flexing their purchasing power with advisers. It’s important therefore for investment advisers to understand that each client has views that are unique and diverse, requiring flexibility and customization to support each client's goals. This panel will explore best in practice communication strategies for a more meaningful and effective client engagement experience.

Panel: Growth Opportunities in Frontier Markets: Accessing NextGen Investment Opportunities

Dynamism, innovation, hunger, an appetite for risk and an opportunity for ROI—these are the traits that have come to define NextGen businesses. But these businesses, typically SMEs, are becoming associated more and more with a new trait—as engines of SDG achievement. NextGen businesses are advancing investable solutions in financial services, tech innovation and clean energy, and they are doing it in the world’s toughest markets. If they can access the capital (beyond the levels of microfinance) that can enable them to scale, then their profitability can be tied to transformative change and sustainable development in the areas that need it the most. This panel will explore the role that the United Nations is playing in catalysing investment for NextGen SMEs to help them become bankable and to ensure that the SDGs reach the “last mile”.
