When it comes to addressing diversity and inclusion in the workplace, the financial advice profession has made significant strides. As this issue of InvestmentNews intends to show, people of different ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and physical ability are everywhere. Some of them, like our Lifetime Achievement Award winner LeCount R. Davis, have advanced and contributed to this noble profession in ways that have redefined what it means to be a steward of other people’s money. Others, like rising star Divam Mehta, are relative newcomers committed to empowering diverse advisers to thrive in our profession.
Still, the investment advice profession has a long way to go in reflecting the diversity of America — a long way to go. In a nation where the population of African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and other people of color is growing, the financial advice industry remains overwhelmingly white.
African-Americans, Asians and Hispanics/Latinos make up 20% of financial advisers, even though they constitute 36% of the population. We have to do better.
So, while this issue — and its online presentation at InvestmentNews.com — celebrates and honors all those who have overcome formidable obstacles to make this industry more diverse and inclusive, it also serves as a challenge for all of us to continue to fight the good fight and to work toward creating a profession where no one is made to feel “less than” for who they really are.
Thank you to all the members of our D&I Advisory Board who worked alongside the InvestmentNews team to inform our content and develop an outstanding award initiative. We could not have done this without you.
