Partner, Moneta Group Investment Advisors

One of six kids growing up on a farm, Diane Compardo, partner with Moneta Group in Clayton, Mo., learned early to work hard and be self-reliant. This foundation helped when she was recruited out of college in 1992 by a Big Six accounting firm.

"They love the work ethic coming off the farm," she said.

She joined Moneta five years later, intrigued by the opportunity to take her client relationships farther. Her goal was not just to provide financial counsel, but also to implement advice.

With relationships still on her mind 15 years later, Ms. Compardo was inspired to change the structure of her team to enhance the lives of both employees and clients.

Her changes included:

• Hiring highly driven individuals for entry-level positions, such as those with a master's degree in economics or CFP designation.

• Creating an identifiable career path to partnership for team members.

• Providing more training — deeper, broader, technical — to enable advisers to handle any type of financial decisions faced by clients.

The model proved very successful and is being replicated across the organization. It has brought Ms. Compardo great satisfaction in several ways.

"I love the energy I get from teaching young people," she said. "And looking at long-term succession planning, I realized that relationships take a long time."
