Alexandra Armstrong Award Winner 2018
InvestmentNews’ 2018 Alexandra Armstrong Award for Lifetime Achievement in Financial Planning goes to Karen Schaeffer, co-founder of Schaeffer Financial.
Karen Schaeffer has not only experienced the full evolution of financial planning, she has been an integral part in shaping and guiding that evolution.
As the co-founder of Schaeffer Financial in Rockville, Md., Ms. Schaeffer recalls the early days of the business in the late 1970s when there were no models for advisory firms.
"There was nobody doing financial planning back then. If you needed investments, you went to a broker; if you needed help with taxes, you went to a CPA; and if you needed insurance, you went to somebody who sold insurance," she said. “We were just a bunch of like-minded people who figured it out."
Financial planning pioneer
This annual award celebrates women who have been pioneers in financial planning. It recognizes women who have had long careers as advisers, a track record of leadership in the industry, and a demonstrated commitment to serve as a role model or mentor to other women. It also acknowledges women who are admired and respected by their colleagues in the profession.
The inaugural award was given in 2015 to Alexandra Armstrong, chairwoman and founder of Armstrong Fleming & Moore Inc.
The recipient of this year’s Alexandra Armstrong Award was chosen by InvestmentNews’ selection committee. Schaeffer, as well as our 20 Women to Watch, will be honored at a leadership event dedicated to women in the advice industry on March 14, 2019, in New York.
