Philip Chao

Philip is a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) with over four decades in the financial services and investment management industry. Across that career he has built his practice on a single conviction: that investment management is, first and foremost, risk management, and that a portfolio should be constructed to meet each client's stated objectives rather than retrofitted to a pre-set model.

Philip's work rests on a clear fiduciary infrastructure he built across three firms. Through Experiential Wealth, a wealth and investment management company, he serves as Chief Investment Officer and senior consultant, acting as either an ERISA 3(21) fiduciary investment advisor or an ERISA 3(38) discretionary fiduciary investment manager for defined benefit, 401(k), 403(b), and 457(b) plans. Through Independent Fiduciary Services, he provides directed trustee services for employer-sponsored health and welfare trusts. And as founding principal of Nexus338, he leads the development of personalized retirement plan solutions. The common thread across all three is an unwavering commitment to the twin fiduciary duties of loyalty and due care, upheld openly for every client.

Personalization is the first principle of that framework. Nexus338, an SEC-registered investment advisor Philip founded, focuses on the creation, development, and innovation of personalized investment solutions for employer-sponsored retirement plans. After more than ten years of ideation and analysis, it launched its proprietary Individualized Glide Path Solution (iGPS), a retirement plan QDIA that individualizes each participant's glide path rather than defaulting an entire population into a single dated fund. Nexus338 serves as the 3(38) fiduciary manager for iGPS.

Deeply established in the retirement plan ecosystem, Philip is regularly invited to consult for financial service institutions seeking to understand the market and the solutions it demands. His in-depth quarterly commentary, originally written for clients, now available to the public, examines the landscape through a macroeconomic and geo-economic lens, using the Federal Reserve's Summary of Economic Projections as a framework to update readers on the real economy, inflation, the labor market, and the FOMC's monetary policy path.

In late 2025, Philip published his first book, Save to Safe: A Personalized Journey from Fragility to Resilience. In 2023, he launched his podcast, Tao of Chao, where he hosts professionals across a range of fields on topics both timely and broadly relevant. He is also a sought-after speaker at industry events, where he shares his perspective on the economy, the investment landscape, and the employer-sponsored retirement plan industry in particular.
