Southern RIAs find strength in niche expertise
The region’s standout firms prove that concentrated services, unified teams, and close relationships can outperform industry scale
Southern registered investment advisors (RIAs) are proving that in a consolidating wealth management industry, tight specialization beats scale. This report looks at the firms, across the 16 states that make up the South, building a distinct edge suited to their region and clientele, from boutique independence to niche retirement planning to unified, one-roof advisory teams.
At Aviance Capital Partners in Naples, FL, partner and portfolio manager Alex Crevi says independence is central to the firm’s edge. “We believe this independence is one of our biggest assets,” Crevi says, noting it gives clients, advisors, and support staff confidence in the firm’s stability as the wealth management industry consolidates.
Clients work directly with the portfolio managers making their investment decisions rather than through layers of institutional bureaucracy. That structure, Crevi adds, is also what attracts talent – experienced portfolio managers who want to focus on their craft and build real client relationships rather than get absorbed into a consolidating industry.
The firm’s investment team includes CFA® charter holders and a CFP® professional, with several strategies approaching 20-year track records. Rapid economic growth in Naples has brought younger business owners diversifying away from a single business, alongside retirees and pre-retirees translating savings into a sustainable income plan.

Creating a better retirement RIA
In Bluffton, SC, Brandon M. Cox of Coastline Complete Wealth has taken specialization further, building the firm entirely around retirees and those nearing retirement. “Most of our clients spent decades saving for retirement with the expectation that they’d be in a lower tax bracket later,” Cox says. “Then retirement arrives, and they’re surprised to discover those savings have created the very tax problem they hoped to avoid.”
That insight drives the firm’s tech-supported approach to retirement income: the team uses RightCapital to build out comprehensive retirement plans and Holistiplan to comb tax returns for proactive planning opportunities. Cox’s biggest move of the past year was going independent, launching the firm’s own RIA after longtime partner Commonwealth Financial Network was acquired. “It gave us the independence to create the client experience we envisioned,” he says.

Integration as a financial advantage
Acorn Financial Advisory Services in Reston, VA, took a different route to the same principle: consolidating expertise under one roof instead of narrowing by client type. Director of operations Justin Gambaccini says the firm was built to close the gaps between separate tax strategists, wealth advisors, and estate planners.
“This unified structure ensures our clients receive proactive advice, completely eliminating the need for them to play the middleman between isolated professionals,” he says. That model has become especially valuable for a specific clientele: executives navigating complex equity compensation and liquidity events, including leaders at major technology companies such as Amazon, Google, Meta, Anthropic, and SpaceX who, as Gambaccini puts it, can focus on their profession while Acorn focuses on their prosperity.

Where depth becomes the differentiator
For the South’s leading RIAs, the throughline is consistent: the edge still comes down to depth of relationship, not size. What ties InvestmentNews’ winners together is conviction. Each firm looked at where the industry was consolidating and chose the opposite direction: fewer clients, deeper relationships, sharper specialization.
Bigger isn’t winning in the South’s wealth management market right now. Focus is.
