Consumer confidence edges up in August

The Reuters/University of Michigan survey fell to a reading of 61.7 in August, compared with 61.2 in June.

Confidence among U.S. consumers saw a slight uptick in August, according to a preliminary release of the Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers’ Index of Consumer Sentiment. The index fell to a reading of 61.7 in August, compared with 61.2 in June. That compares with 83.4 in August 2007. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch were expecting a rise to 62. In June, the index fell to 56.4, the worst reading since May 1980. The final August reading will be released Aug. 29. Thomson Reuters is based in New York, and the University of Michigan is in Ann Arbor.
