State Street Global Advisors has strengthened its C-suite with a veteran leader and former C-level executive from Charles Schwab.

On Friday, the asset management arm of State Street announced it has tapped James Ferrarelli as its new executive vice president and chief operating officer. In his new role, Ferrarelli will be reporting to State Street Global Advisors CEO Yie-Hsin Hung.

"We are thrilled to welcome James to State Street Global Advisors as our chief operating officer,” Hung said in a statement. “I look forward to him joining our leadership team and working with him to implement a strategic vision aimed at building a top-tier operations and technology environment.”

Prior to State Street Global Advisors, Ferrarelli’s professional record included eight years serving at Schwab, where he played a leading role in developing the firm’s investment and technological capabilities.

Most recently, he worked as the chief information officer of Schwab’s wealth and asset management divisions. In that position, he was in charge of those units’ technology strategy, app design and development and third-party product integration. He also oversaw production management of the tech platforms supporting the corporation’s internal business enterprises.

Before that, Ferrarelli’s record of progressive leadership at Schwab included stints heading its investment management and investment advisory technology divisions.

Pre-Schwab, James held senior technology leadership roles at JPMorgan Asset Management and at Morgan Stanley Investment Management.

At State Street Global Advisors, Ferrarelli’s expansive mandate will see him in charge of building world-class technology, systems, and operational infrastructure to support the business across all the asset classes, client segments, and geographies it covers.

"I am excited to join the dynamic leadership team at State Street Global Advisors as Chief Operating Officer,” Ferrarelli said.

“Leveraging my industry experience, I am eager to help boost efficiency, quality and scalability that will position the firm for continued success in the years to come,” he said.

In November last year, State Street Global Advisors recruited another respected leader to its C-suite with its addition of Anna Paglia, Invesco’s former global head of ETFs, as its chief business officer.

In October, the firm’s parent company, State Street, announced plans for a leadership shakeup as Louis Maiuri, its president and head of investment services, prepares for a graceful exit to retirement.
