The Columbia Journalism Review takes CNNMoney to task for a video on how to improve your odds of winning a lottery. The clip features tips from "seven-time lottery winner" Richard Lustig, who advises setting a budget for lottery tickets, avoiding quick picks, and buying numerous tickets in the same game. CJR headlined the piece "The Worst Personal-Finance Video Ever." CJR author Felix Salmon notes that Lustig, who wrote a book on the same topic, also advises people to "reinvest" a portion of their winnings into more tickets. That bit of investment advice came in a Fox 13 News (Tampa Bay) profile of Mr. Lustig, who comes off as someone who's struck it rich playing the lottery with a disciplined system. Mr. Lustig said he didn't know if he'd made a net profit playing the lottery, but claims his three biggest payoffs total more than a million dollars. "Obviously I'm ahead. Otherwise, I wouldn't be in the [financial] position I am," said Mr. Lustig, who also runs a talent booking agency dealing mostly with classic-rock bands. His booking business has been slow, he said, and lottery winnings have supplemented his income. "I do claim net profits, and others can [do it] too," he said, pointing to testimonials for his book at winninglotterymethod.com .
