The number of American workers who filed new claims for jobless benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 478,000 during the one-week period ended Oct. 18, from a revised 463,000 the prior week, according to Department of Labor data. The effects of Hurricane Ike, which battered the Texas coast last month, contributed to 12,000 of the jobless claims, according to the Labor Department. Late September, new jobless claims rose to their highest point in seven years, at 493,000 (InvestmentNews, Sept. 25).
