When Mike Zung was approaching 40, he found himself at a crossroads.

“It wasn't so much a midlife crisis, but more of a deep realization,” he says. “I wanted my work to have a more immediate and tangible impact.”

Having spent 20 years in software development, Zung yearned for something for direct – more personal. A yearning that ultimately led him into the world of finance, a field he’d always been intrigued by.

He immersed himself in the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) curriculum, a challenging and comprehensive journey into the world of finance – and Zung’s discovery of the XY Planning Network played a pivotal role in his transition.

"The network was a revelation,” he says. “It provided a platform that not only supported my transition but also encouraged my growth. It was like finding a community that spoke my language and shared my aspirations.”

It wasn’t long after that Zung established Java Wealth Planning. And his unique background in software development profoundly influenced his approach to financial planning. Zung expertly blended the agile methodology from his tech days into his financial planning practice. In his practice, Zung also leverages his tech expertise to enhance the client experience. Automation and a tech-forward approach are at the forefront of his methods to meet the needs of his tech-savvy clients and make financial planning less intimidating.

"Adopting an agile approach to financial planning felt very natural,” says Zung. “It's about breaking down complex financial goals into manageable, iterative chunks. This method not only helps in addressing immediate priorities but also in adapting to life’s inevitable changes.”

Zung's insights into the specific financial challenges faced by tech professionals are particularly astute – but his real joy comes in helping clients navigate complex financial decisions.

"Imagine suddenly finding yourself with a significant equity compensation,” Zung tells Investment News. “It's not just a financial windfall; it's a life-changing event. My role is to guide clients through these moments, blending technical expertise with an understanding of their personal aspirations. Whether it's buying a home, taking a sabbatical, or changing careers, these are profound decisions that require thoughtful planning.”

And Zung’s approach to financial planning is also influenced by his alternative perspective.

"Being an outsider in finance has been more of an advantage than a challenge. It allowed me to build and share my ideas openly, leading to opportunities like speaking at virtual summits and creating financial planning solutions for fellow advisors. My journey is a testament to the power of bringing diverse perspectives to traditional fields.”

Zung also discusses his foray into creating a YouTube channel, an extension of his commitment to making financial advice more accessible and understandable. Through his channel, he can visually break down complex topics, making them more approachable for a wider audience.

And, looking to the future, Zung is focused on expanding his educational outreach through his YouTube channel and providing scalable financial advice.

"My future goals revolve around content creation and education. While I plan to remain solo or with a small team, my focus is on delivering scalable, accessible financial advice. It's about reaching more people, sharing knowledge, and making a difference in the world of personal finance.”
