KeyBank brings in a veteran of Wilmington Trust to run day-to-day operations for its growing $70 billion wealth business.

Mike Keane, the former chief operating officer of Wilmington Trust, M&T Bank's wealth management division, has been appointed chief operating officer of Key Wealth at KeyBank, effective October 1, 2026 - stepping in as his predecessor, Joe Calabrese, prepares to retire after more than three decades in the wealth management industry.

Keane will report to Joe Skarda, head of Key Wealth, and will oversee the integrated delivery of the division's financial planning, investment, fiduciary, and banking capabilities across the business.

The appointment comes at a meaningful moment for Key Wealth. According to InvestmentNews, the division added 53 net advisors in 2025, pushing total headcount to 543, while assets under management climbed 14% year-over-year to $70 billion. The Cleveland-based bank has publicly stated its ambition to grow assets under management to $100 billion by 2030.

Bringing in a transformation specialist

Keane brings more than 25 years of experience in strategy, operations, and business transformation across wealth management, brokerage, and banking. At Wilmington Trust, M&T Bank's wealth division, he led growth and modernization initiatives focused on enhancing both client and advisor experiences, according to KeyBank's announcement. He is based in Baltimore.

"Mike is a proven financial services leader with deep experience driving growth, modernizing operating models, and building high-performing teams," said Skarda. "His track record of leading transformation across wealth management and banking makes him exceptionally well suited to help guide the next chapter of our business."

Keane holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance and an MBA from the University at Buffalo and has completed executive education programs at Harvard Law School and the University of Michigan Ross School of Business.

"Key Wealth has a strong reputation for delivering comprehensive advice and personalized service to clients, and I'm honored to join the organization at such an exciting time," said Keane. "I look forward to partnering with Joe, the Wealth leadership team, and colleagues across the bank to build on the strong foundation already in place and continue driving growth and innovation for our clients and advisors."

A measured transition

Calabrese, who joined Key Wealth in 2016, will remain with the organization through year-end to support the transition before retiring. Skarda credited him with shaping Key Wealth's growth strategy, operating model, and client experience capabilities over his nearly decade-long tenure.

"Joe's contributions to Key Wealth and the broader wealth management industry have been extraordinary," Skarda said. "We are grateful for his leadership, partnership, and lasting impact on our organization."

The shift in Key Wealth's COO seat reflects a broader pattern across the bank wealth management sector, where large regional institutions are investing in operational leadership to keep pace with accelerating growth targets. Wilmington Trust itself made a leadership transition in late 2024,  elevating Lisa Roberts as head of wealth management as the firm continued to expand its high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth client base.

Key Wealth, which operates across Key Private Bank, Key Family Wealth, Key Private Client, and Key Institutional Advisors, is part of KeyCorp (NYSE: KEY), one of the nation's largest bank-based financial services companies, with approximately $191 billion in assets as of June 30, 2026, according to the company's announcement.

Competing for talent and scale

Keane's mandate will include managing the operational infrastructure that underpins Key Wealth's advisor platform as the firm continues its push to attract talent from wirehouses and independent channels. Key Wealth's advisor recruitment drive, which added 10% headcount in a single year, has put additional pressure on operations teams to onboard advisors efficiently and deliver a competitive client experience.

For wealth managers and financial advisors, the appointment signals that Key Wealth is treating operational scale as a strategic priority as it works toward the $100 billion AUM milestone. With Keane's background in transformation and modernization, the broader question for bank-affiliated wealth divisions of how to keep the advisor experience competitive against independent platforms will be front of mind.
