As the Securities and Exchange Commission approaches its 75th anniversary in 2009, it is more important than ever to hear directly from the Chairman, the Commissioners, and the senior staff about the initiatives for the coming year.
The focus of the Commission for the past several years has been on Sarbanes-Oxley rulemaking and, following that far-reaching set of regulations, securities offering reform, executive compensation disclosure, and significant enforcement activity.
As developments in the capital markets have progressed and attention has focused on the ability of U.S. companies to compete internationally, the SEC has tackled de-registration for foreign private issuers and has issued rule proposals that will, if approved, extend IFRS to U.S. companies, redraft Rule 144, and much, much more.
