10 sectors to watch when Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump become president
Disruption factor: Federal government's subsidizing of renewable energy sources.
Market exposure: Energy Select SPDR ETF (XLE), Vanguard Energy ETF (VDE)
Ms. Clinton has made alternative energy a big part of her campaign platform, which means support for the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which is scheduled to expire in 2021. Alternative energy needs at least that much support to gain a firm toehold in the energy space.
Mr. Trump's support for all forms of energy could lead to an ITC reduction, possibly down to 10% from the current 30%. This could present a near-term boost for traditional fossil fuel refiners.
