NFL stars who’ve flagged their advisers
Love him or hate him, there's no doubting that Michael Vick is a remarkably gifted athlete. In 2006, he became the only quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards during the regular season. But when it comes to hiring financial advisers, the QB's record is slightly less impressive.
After his conviction in 2007 for running a dogfighting ring, Mr. Vick hired Omaha-based financial adviser Mary Wong. Court documents show that Mr.Vick believes he gave about $550,000 to the adviser. Mr. Vick's attorneys said the ex-Atlanta Falcon QB gave Ms. Wong a general power of attorney so she could manage his assets while he was serving time in prison. Ms. Wong purported to sell investments in luxury properties in several states, but prosecutors said many of the investments never existed. Instead, they said Ms. Wong used the money to support her other businesses and a tony lifestyle. In September, she pleaded guilty to stealing more than $3 million from Mr. Vick and other players. She is due to be sentenced next month. [Photo: Keith Allison]
