In an alert in May, the SEC claimed that an Internet group was masquerading as — you guessed it —the SEC.
The SEC said that the group went by various DBAs, including the “U.S. Securities and Equities Administration.” The con artists even set up a website: gov.ussea.us/ index.html, which includes its own investor alerts and warnings. Those include 'The Pitfalls of Ponzi Schemes,' and our personal favorite, 'Investing and the Internet — Be Alert to Signs of Fraud'.
