States with the highest property taxes in 2023
Property taxes can be a major expense for some homeowners, but the size of that expense varies greatly from state to state. A recent WalletHub study ranks the states by their real-estate tax rate and then calculates the annual taxes an individual would pay on a home priced at median value in the U.S. in 2021 of $244,900, as well as on a residence priced at the median value for each state.
To put things in context, the Census Bureau says the average American household pays $2,690 in property taxes a year.
