Surprising Social Security survivor benefit rules
Nearly 65 million people receive Social Security benefits today including about 6 million survivors of deceased workers. Survivor benefits are available to eligible family members including widows, widowers, surviving ex-spouses, minor children and permanently disabled adult children. The benefit amounts and eligible ages for receiving those benefits are different than retirement benefits.
