Surprising Social Security survivor benefit rules
No age limit for caregiving spouses
Surviving spouses of any age who are caring for minor dependent children of the deceased worker are eligible for survivor benefits worth 75% of the deceased worker’s benefit until the youngest child turns 16. Permanently disabled adult children and their caregiving parent can collect survivor benefits for the rest of their lives.
