Robert H. Benmosche, who once was chief executive and chairman of New York-based MetLife Inc., has been chosen as the new CEO of American International Group Inc., according to The Wall Street Journal.
He will replace AIG’s government-appointed leader, Edward M. Liddy, who in May said that he would step down from his post as soon as the New York-based insurer’s board of directors found replacements for both its CEO and chairman.
At the time, Mr. Liddy suggested that AIG divide its chairman and CEO functions into two roles.
While Mr. Benmosche will assume just Mr. Liddy’s CEO duties, AIG is expected to name a new chairman shortly, according to The Journal.
AIG’s board has also approved a pay package of between $7 million and $10 million for Mr. Benmosche, insiders told that publication.
In comparison, Mr. Liddy had a $1 salary when he was chosen to lead the company after the federal government took an 80% ownership stake.
Calls to AIG spokeswoman Christina Pretto were not immediately returned.
