American International Group Inc. said Wednesday it named Executive Vice President Rodney O. Martin Jr. as chairman of its international life and retirement businesses, as Senior Vice Chairman Edmund Tse prepares to retire after 48 years with the embattled insurer.

Martin will now oversee American International Assurance Co. Ltd. (AIA), American Life Insurance Co. (ALICO), AIG Star Life Insurance Co. Ltd., AIG Edison Life Insurance Co., and Nan Shan Life Insurance Co. Ltd.

He will continue to serve as chairman of both ALICO and AIA, reporting to AIG Chairman and CEO Edward M. Liddy.

Tse, 71, has served in key roles with AIG over the last half-century and was the principal architect of AIG’s global life insurance platform. Tse will step down at AIG’s annual meeting May 13.

He will serve as honorary chairman of American International Assurance Co. Ltd. and as non-executive of AIG’s Nan Shan business in Taiwan and Philippine American Life and General Insurance Co.

Mark Wilson, currently president and chief operating officer of AIA, will take on the added role of CEO of the business when Tse retires.

The personnel moves are subject to regulatory approvals.

New York-based AIG has been heavily criticized by government officials and the public after it awarded $165 million in bonuses earlier this month despite having received $182.5 billion in federal bailout funds.
