CFP Board forms public policy council

The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. has established a public policy council to support the industry association's advocacy efforts.

The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. has established a public policy council to support the industry association’s advocacy efforts.
The council will act in an advisory capacity for the Washington-based CFP Board and will be responsible for identifying significant public policy issues that are aligned with the organization’s mission to benefit the public.
The council is made up of CFP certificants and members of the public with a background in public affairs, legislation, regulation, taxation, employee pension and health benefits, and consumer advocacy.
The members of the council include Brian T. Borders, founder and principal of Borders Law Group of Washington; Mercer E. Bullard, founder and president of Fund Democracy Inc. of Oxford, Miss.; James K. Conzelman, senior vice president at the Stanford Financial Group of Houston; Nancy Johnson Jones, chief compliance officer of HighTower Advisors of Chicago; Ron Klink, president of Ron Klink & Associates LLC in Washington; Terry L. Lister, senior vice president and chief regulation officer at Waddell & Reed & Inc. in Overland Park, Kan.; Karen Schaeffer, president of Schaeffer Financial in Rockville, Md.; and Mark J. Ugoretz, president and treasurer of the ERISA Industry Committee in Washington.
The council will hold its first meeting in December and will work closely with Marilyn Mohrman-Gillis, the CFP Board’s managing director of public policy.
The CFP Board oversees more than 58,000 CFP certificate holders in the United States.
