Charles Schwab hands reins to Bettinger

The Charles Schwab Corp. has named Walter W. Bettinger II as its president and chief executive, effective Oct. 1.

The company’s founder, chairman and chief executive, Charles R. Schwab, will remain as executive chairman of the board of directors.
“Over the last 17 months in the role of president and chief operating officer, Walt and his management team have proven their ability to maintain strategic focus, discipline and forward progress, even in the midst of a choppy external environment,” Mr. Schwab said in a statement.
Mr. Bettinger, who has worked at Schwab for 13 years, had been appointed president and chief operating officer in February 2007 and oversaw Schwab Investor Services, Schwab Institutional, Schwab Investor Development and Schwab Corporate and Retirement Services.
Additionally, he was responsible for investment management, banking, technology, human resources, and operations at the San Francisco-based brokerage company.
Prior to joining Schwab, Mr. Bettinger founded The Hampton Co., a provider of retirement plan services to corporations and their employees that was bought by Schwab in 1995.
Schwab has more than 7.3 million client brokerage accounts, 1.3 million corporate retirement plan participants, 355,000 banking accounts and $1.4 trillion in client assets.
