Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., introduced a measure to promote financial literacy through education grants. State and local agencies could apply for funding, as could nonprofits and even businesses, as long as 75% of the money was subcontracted to local groups. In HR 1918, she asked for $125 million for each fiscal year between 2012 and 2017. It was referred to the Committee on Education and the Workforce and has no co-sponsors. A similar bill, S 865, was introduced by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and was sent to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
