* Kanaly Trust Co. in Houston has promoted David Doll, 37, to president and chief operating officer, from senior vice president and trust officer.

* The Phoenix Cos. Inc. has appointed chief executive Dona D. Young to the additional role of chairman, effective April 1. Mrs. Young, 49, joined the Hartford, Conn., insurer in 1980 as an attorney.

* RBS Greenwich Capital Markets Inc. in Connecticut has named Peter DiMartino managing director, head of asset-backed-securities strategy and research. Mr. DiMartino, 40, previously was a director at Salomon Smith Barney Inc. in New York and head of its asset-backed securities and mortgage credit research unit.

* Forward Management LLC, a San Francisco-based investment firm, has named Clay Smudsky a managing director in charge of sales and client-service personnel. Mr. Smudsky, 40, previously was vice president of institutional sales at RS Investments in San Francisco. Before that, he was a divisional manager in that city with Salomon Brothers Asset Management Inc.

* Lord Abbett & Co. LLC in Jersey City, N.J., has appointed John J. Brett director of its strategic relations group. Mr. Brett, 45, most recently was the Hopewell, N.J.-based director of origination for the financial advisory center with Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc.

* SAFECO Corp. in Redmond, Wash., has named James Sandidge Eastern division sales manager for its SAFECO Life and Investments broker-dealer distribution channel. Mr. Sandidge, 46, was regional vice president and Eastern regional sales manager with INVESCO Funds Group Inc. of Denver. He will be based in New Jersey.

Joining him will be two new regional sales managers: Stephen Pilger, 38, former regional vice president with Phoenix Wealth Management; and Ralph Brownell, 55, formerly national sales and training manager in the broker-dealer channel of SAFECO Life and Investments.

* Transamerica Investment Management LLC has appointed Janet Elie, 52, vice president, national accounts within its insurance and investment group.

Ms. Elie will oversee the sales, marketing development and operations of Transamerica’s national account relationships.

She is based in Transamerica’s operations center in Kansas City, Mo. Prior to joining Transamerica in November 2001, Ms. Elie was first vice president and product manager for First Union Securities Inc. in Richmond, Va., where she managed the insurance services department.

* CNA Trust in Costa Mesa, Calif., a wholly owned subsidiary of Chicago-based CNA Financial Corp., has hired Jim Huennekens, 44, as vice president, regional sales director for the Midwest. Mr. Huennekens, who is based in Chicago, will be responsible for furthering the company’s marketing presence across the country. Most recently, he served as vice president of institutional sales for Boston-based Liberty Funds, responsible for national sales.

* Investment Technology Group Inc. in New York has appointed Maureen O’Hara, 49, to its board of directors.

She most recently served as president of the American Finance Association in Berkeley, Calif. She was also the Robert W. Purcell professor of finance at the Johnson Graduate school of Management at Cornell University.

Her work has appeared in the leading journals, including the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, the American Economic Review and the Journal of Economic History.

* CheckFree Investment Services, a Jersey City, N.J.-based division of CheckFree Corp., has appointed Tom Steinberger, 48, vice president and business unit leader for M-Solutions. This division houses the company’s M-Search, M-Watch and M-Pact enterprise software applications for investment professionals. Mr. Steinberger was most recently senior vice president and chief operating officer of multimanager investment advisory services at JPMorgan Private Bank in New York.

* Stephens Inc., a full service investment banking and brokerage firm in Little Rock, Ark., has appointed Jane P. Saunders, 65, and Bentley E. Blackmon, 31, vice presidents and senior financial consultants.

As members of Stephens Inc.’s private-client group, they will provide investment services and financial planning to individuals, businesses, endowments and foundations.

Ms. Saunders, a top producing broker, is a certified financial planner and certified investment management analyst. Mr. Blackmon is a CFP, a certified public accountant and a chartered financial analyst. Both were with the Little Rock office of New York-based Morgan Stanley.

* Beacon Trust Co. in Madison, N.J., has named Timothy Colin Call vice president and portfolio manager and Mark A. May, 30, assistant vice president and portfolio manager.

Mr. Call, 34, was director of research at Louis Brockenrough & Co. of Richmond, Va. Mr. May, 30, was with JP Morgan Securities in New York.

* Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin of Los Angeles has made the following promotions in its New York office:

Lorre Jay, 41, to director, from senior vice president; Tanja Aalto, 32; Lily Chu, 42; Christopher Croft, 41; Dorian Lowell, 43; and Brian McDonald, 37, to senior vice presidents, from vice presidents.

* Investors Capital Holdings Ltd. in Lynnfield, Mass., has appointed Richard Brown, 34, to direct its newly-expanded insurance subsidiary, ICC Insurance Agency Inc.

Mr. Brown was with Lincoln (Neb.) Benefit Life Co., responsible for wholesaling variable-universal-life products throughout the Northeast.

* Hartford Life Insurance Co. in Simsbury, Conn., has named James Davey, 38, vice president in charge of its corporate retirement plans business. Mr. Davey will oversee sales support, product development, pricing and marketing for the division.

* Ohio National Financial Services in Cincinnati has named John J. Palmer vice chairman.

Mr. Palmer, 63, previously was executive vice president, strategic initiatives.

In addition, Ohio National has appointed Edith F. Thompson second vice president, individual annuity operations.

Ms. Thompson, 58, previously served as assistant vice president of that division.

* Chaffee and Westenberg Cos. LLP in Edina, Minn., has named Robert Gibson, 59, a partner.

Mr. Gibson previously was managing director, head of investment services at RBC Capital Markets in Minneapolis.

* Indiana First Bank in Indiana, Pa., has named Robert C. Nagel, 49, senior vice president, wealth management.

Mr. Nagel will also be president of Indiana First’s InFirst Financial Advisors LLC unit.

He previously was an adviser in Greensburgh, Pa., with PNC Financial Services Group Inc.

* Henderson & Lyman, a Chicago-based law firm, has named Douglas E. Arend, 44, a partner.

Mr. Arend specializes in securities regulation. He previously was an associate with the firm.
