Putnam Investments today named Jeffrey R. Carney to the newly created position of senior managing director and head of global marketing and products at the Boston-based firm.

Mr. Carney, 46, most recently served as president of retirement and global-wealth-and-investment-management client solutions at Bank of America.

He takes over the position at Putnam on Oct. 27.

He will report to chief executive Robert Reynolds and will be responsible for the firm’s defined contribution business, global product management, public and government relations, global marketing and marketing communications.

William Connolly, senior managing director and head of global distribution, will continue to lead the distribution effort and report to Mr. Reynolds.

“The prospective close working partnership of Bill and Jeff offers an unprecedented opportunity for us to optimize the current and future Putnam marketing and distribution platform,” Mr. Reynolds said in a statement.

Mr. Carney joined Bank of America in July 2007. Prior to that, he was president of Fidelity Retirement Services, a unit of Fidelity Investments of Boston.

Before that, he served as president of Fidelity Personal Investments since 2002.

Putnam managed $137 billion in assets as of Sept. 30.
