Social Security benefits checklist
Patience pays off
You can start receiving retirement benefits as early as age 62, but the longer you wait to file for benefits — up to age 70 — the higher your monthly amount will be for the rest of your life. You can see the impact of starting benefits at different ages by checking your Social Security Statement or the Retirement Estimator. Both are available at www.socialsecurity.gov/onlineservices.
