Lynx Investment Advisory LLC in Washington has hired Matthew Gelfand, 53, as chief investment officer for consulting activities.

He will direct research on managers and global capital markets.

Mr. Gelfand founded financial planning firm MDG Financial Advisors LLC in Bethesda, Md.

In addition, Lynx Investment Advisory has hired Vipin Sahijwani, 37, as managing director of research and risk management.

Previously, he managed a hedge fund as a portfolio manager for Arithmetrics LLC in Arlington, Va.

The National Association of Active Investment Managers in Littleton, Colo., has elected Renee Toth, 52, as president.

She will be responsible for running the trade group in 2009-10 and will also guide the organization’s growth services, membership recruitment and representation of active managers in the investment industry.

Ms. Toth also plans to further the NAAIM’s active-mutual-fund index and the organization’s annual award-granting Advancements of Active Investment Management competition.

She is the executive vice president of Flexible Plan Investments Ltd. in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

KBS Capital Market Group of Newport Beach, Calif., has promoted Mike Crimmins, 42, to chief executive and managing director, from national sales manager.

He will replace Greg Brakovich, 56, who helped found KBS and left the company last month.

Mr. Crimmins will be responsible for day-to-day operations, as well as oversight of internal and external wholesaling operations and activities.

Sterling National Bank of Yonkers, N.Y., has hired three executives to help expand its professional banking division.

Angelo J. Frangella, 45, has been named to the newly created position of senior vice president. He will be responsible for developing new client relationships and expanding the company’s market presence.

Previously, Mr. Frangella held a senior management position at HSBC USA Inc. in New York.

The firm hired Joanne Gagliardi and Steven Z. Reisner as vice presidents and development officers for the professional banking division.

Ms. Gagliardi, 42, will also take on the responsibility of identifying new business opportunities, with the goal of developing more-broad banking relationships. Previously, she worked in business development and sales in Wilmington, Del., for JPMorgan Chase & Co. of New York.

Mr. Reisner, 47, will identify new business opportunities for the professional banking division to develop broad banking relationships and will be based in New York.

Previously, he worked for Bank Leumi USA in New York in business development and financial sales.

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Springfield has named Roger W. Crandall, 44, chief executive, effective Jan. 1.

He will replace Stuart H. Reese, 54, who will assume the role of non-executive chairman.

Mr. Crandall will remain president of the company after assuming the CEO role. He will be responsible for oversight of the company’s U.S. insurance group, enterprise technology organization, retirement businesses and subsidiaries MassMutual International LLC, Babson Capital Management LLC and Baring Asset Management Ltd.

J.H. Shoemaker & Co. Inc. of Germantown, Tenn., has promoted Thomas “Mac” Jenkins, 40, to managing partner, from general manager.

He will be responsible for recruiting, training and the development of advisers for Shoemaker.

Newport Capital Group LLC of Red Bank, N.J., has hired Lauren S. Goldfarb, 29, as vice president of marketing.

Her responsibilities will include developing and implementing the yearly marketing plan, pipeline reporting and network processes. In addition, Ms. Goldfarb will be responsible for media relations and holding events for the firm.

Previously Ms. Goldfarb was director of marketing at RegentAtlantic Capital LLC of Morristown, N.J., where she was responsible for target market research, media, website implementation, customer relationship management training and reporting, and client events.
