Received a trampoline, diamond or Rottweiler puppy for Christmas? Enjoy and beware.
According to AAA Insurance, those gifts — and several others on an updated list — may be covered only partially or not at all for loss, damage and liability under most basic homeowner’s insurance policies.
“Many shoppers save all year for those big wish-list items, but they may not consider the total cost of that purchase when it comes to their homeowner policy,” said Brad Oltmans, vice president of insurance for AAA Arizona.
The list can help advisers better prepare clients for an unexpected rise in premiums or alert them to gaps in their policies.
Trampolines, for example, are the gift most likely to boost the cost of insurance, because insurers contend they involve a high risk of personal injury. Rottweilers and pit bulls often are excluded from coverage because they are considered “vicious breeds.” And fine jewelry usually is covered, but often only up to a certain value.
